Netbooks

Netbook is the name of those new really small laptops. Dell has one that you can get for under 400 with certain configurations, even as low as 349. Asus has a model and new ones are on the way from other vendors like HP.

Dell has an awesome new look. A sleek rounded desktop, with a small form factor. They come in a variety of snazzy color sleeves. And for those of you who need to change the color of the desktop with the seasons you can buy extra sleeves for $20 and up. This new Dell Studio Hybrid at $499 after 130 rebate is not a bad deal, with respectable memory, cpu and hard disk.

Signing Blind

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: Announcements

Its been a busy week for me, my daughter gets married Saturday. Tuesday night, I had to take my son to the doctor’s, after my son dislocated his finger. We went to an orthopedic urgent care office. We’ve been there before, which is a testament to his football participation. Anyhow it bothered me the first time and it bothered me again. When you go there, you have to sign to have treatment and stuff but you never see the document, you just have a little digital pad with a digital pen and you sign your name. For all I know I could be signing up for live organ donations.

Shouldn’t we at least have the option of seeing what we’re signing; I mean, if we choose not to read that’s one thing but to not even see it? What’s up with that?

Burned By Paypal

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: Services

I have a bank account tied to my PayPal account, I don’t recall why I did this but at some point it seemed necessary, maybe it was to get a verified address. Anyhow I typically like to use my American Express card for most purchases, whether direct or through paypal. Well recently, maybe it was always like this and I was smarter, it always seemed to want to use my bank account first. I didn’t have a real problem with it but it made me a little uncomfortable because this is an account I don’t keep much money in.

Well my fears have finally come to fruition. Recently, I made a purchase, the system says anything the bank account can’t cover, it will use the AMEX as a backup. Friday, I got my insufficient funds notice, $19.00 fee.

PayPal’s response was that they were not responsible and to direct me to the agreement. You know I don’t really mind, except that the screens specifically said they will use the credit card if there is not enough funds…… So how’s that work anyway? Apparently not very well.

Roku Netflix

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: Announcements, Movie Rentals, Services

I just saw an ad from Netflix for a streaming device from a company called Roku. You hook it up to your TV and you can watch Netflix movies at home! The only requirement from Netflix is that you have an unlimited account, so that basically means an account where you can have more than one DVD out at a time.

You can buy the device for $99.00 later on this year there is a Blue Ray player from LG that will be able to access the movies and the XBOX 360 will also have access if you have an XBOX Live Gold membership. The minimum connection is 1.5 Mbps but in one place I saw 3 Mbps as the minimum and in another 4 Mbps. They called that a typical connection but I am not sure that;s my typical connection. They do suggest checking with your provider to see what kind of speed you’re getting and also suggest checking out

This seems like a deal worth investigating, let me know how you make out!

Audible.com

A few posts back where I discussed my GPS and the initial deal I got, I mentioned I had to subscribe to Audible.com for a year. I got a good price, I guess, I didn’t do any comparison shopping. I have to say that I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to download audio books and listen to them. If you are not taking advantage of listening to audio books you are really missing out. They are a great way to make use of otherwise unusable time, like riding in the car, shopping in a store, waiting for your wife while she is shopping in a store and waiting and waiting, um …….. moving on.

At first I simply listened to fiction, the Wheel of Time series to be more specific. However, after I stalled listening to that I began to listen to more helpful books, such the Millionaire Mind and How to Win Friends and Influence People etc. Now I am not into self improvement books but I do like to learn and I am interested in being self employed and these books all had interesting insights and ideas on life and business.

I would encourage anyone with a desire to learn and no free time to speak of, to look into audio books and make use of some of that otherwise unusable time.

Notable Buy

The east coast Best Buy ad today ( on the east coast, South Central Pennsylvania) has an interesting offer. I do not recall ever seeing one quite like it.  Best Buy is offering a laptop and a HD TV for $999.99. Both the laptop and the television are from Toshiba. One of the best laptops I had, which is now used by my oldest son, was a Toshiba.  A cursory discussion with the techs at Best Buy indicated the quality may not be what it once was but that is not a study, just a discussion. If you buy the items separately they would cost an extra $150.00, so not a out of this world savings but no too bad if you need both.  Not to mention Best Buy has a pretty descent Rewards Program.

Hard Pressed by WordPress

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: Announcements

Well I feel like I have finally converted my blog from Googles Blogger to WordPress.  It was quite a bit of work, especially when you have limited time and limited knowledge.  Fortunately, I had the assistance of an online mentor.  He has a lot of experience with Blogs and WordPress, one of his blogs can be found here at http://www.petlvr.com/blog/.

To do this WordPress thing really right, you need to have a handle on it.  There are tons of plug-ins available as well as a variety of themes.  Plus there is a long list of things that can be customized by the admin.  This can really be a whole new world for someone like myself.  At some point I am going to need to write all this down in an e-book.  I am hesitant to write an ebook concerning internet marketing just because I want to see another ebook successful, that doesn’t have this topic.  But I believe my lessons learned could be really helpful to someone else.

If you have any suggestions for the blog, let me know.

Illinois By GPS

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: GPS, Hardware

After a 28 hour round trip to Illinois and back, I am exhausted. There was a break between going and coming but a 14 hour drive on any day of the week is a bit much. We were thrilled to go and see Stewart son number one, Josh.

I am often impressed by the usefulness of my GPS. That little device took me flawlessly from York, Pa. to Great Lakes, Illinois. Once there it took me here and there, helping me get to Dunkin Donuts, Denny’s, a local mall and a public beach on Lake Michigan.

One feature I really like of the GPS is how you can lookup a phone number for a particular place of business listed in the GPS. That can be really handy. Sometimes I get a little burned because I have been too cheap to upgrade my software, despite the GPS’s reminders that the maps are a tad old but for the most part it works great! I have the Navi 360 from Garmin. I got a good deal from Amazon if I also bought a year membership to Audible.com; you can play the books on the GPS, although I tend to use my iPod. The GPS also has bluetooth, can display pictures and has some travel info options you can buy, which I haven’t.

I personally recommend the Garmin 360 and thank Mrs. Stewart for giving it to me for Christmas, of course I picked it out and ordered it for her :)

Animal Control Technology

Posted by: Mr. Stewart  :  Category: Announcements

Mrs. Stewart and I and the youngest Stewart are in Illinois to visit the oldest Stewart child, who just completed Navy boot camp. On the way here I saw an interesting item while passing through Indiana. There are lights that flash if an animal, such as a deer I suspect, is potentially in the road ahead. Its interesting to see. There are large solar panels that power these systems. Along the road, there are white posts, which I assume have some kind of motion detector. When an animal breaks the signal, potentially moving on to the highway, the light starts to blink.

Its not that I am that well traveled, but this is the first time I have seen anything like this. I can only guess at what kind of animal problem warranted the implementation of this kind of technology. But whatever the reason, its a simple and clever use. Do you have a use that you have seen that addresses a local problem? Share it with us here!
